Okay, what's AWANA? We might have one, but by a different name? (Or we may have one and I just don't know about it). What does AWANA stand for? I'm sorry, I can't answer any of the questions until I know this!

And, yes, of course you can invite people onto the forum! The more the merrier.

See if you can tell me whereabouts in SA. I'd say it's probably in Adelaide (especially given that the next-biggest town in this state is tiny).

As for Sunday School, it changes depending on which church you're at. I'm sure you've been to Sunday School and know basically what it's like. I haven't actually been in about 4 years as I'm too old.

I'm sorry I can't be of any more help.

Could you tell me a bit about AWANA?

    Rachel,
Here is a link that describes AWANA, its a kids Bible ministry program, similar to Boy and Girl Scouts but you learn about God and the Bible. I found the link for the Australian clubs:

    http://www.awana.org.au/

See if you can look at that and then let me know.

    Thanks,

Thanks for the link! I've only just glanced at it but I think I understand better now. It says there's one at Fullarton, a suburb of Adelaide which is the capital of SA about and the edge of the city is about 1/2 an hour from where I live (I'm not entirely certain where abouts Fullarton is within the city!). There's also one in Port Lincoln but that's a good 4 hours drive north of me.

I did have a thought that you could do something on CE Camps for your section. I used to go to a lot of CE Camps when I was younger. They're run by some people called 'Christian Endeavour' and are for children ag 9-13. They happen each summer, at the beginning of January, and are 5 days long with 2 church services type events each day, plus several Bible studies and the rest of the day is 'electives' which are usually crafts or sport. Here are some links:
    http://www.su.org.au/sa/supa/cesu.html
    http://cenetwork.wordpress.com/

Another thing would be, if AWANA is like scouts, another camp I go to a lot more now called Wirraway. It's also a Christian camp, but where CE-SU Camp is aimed at Christian kids for intensive Bible study, Wirraway is more like a secular adventure camp where there's a talk about God each evening, we pray before meals, and have Bible study before bed. The studies aren't very comprehensive and are aimed more at either new Christians or non-Christians. Wirrway is more of an adventure camp, with lots of tiring activities all day like horse riding, archery, flying fox, orienteering, low ropes course, rock climbing, swimming, and generally-mucking-about-in-the-Bush. Here's the link for the website:
    http://www.wirraway.org/

    I hope this helps some.

So what are the age limits for your Sunday School class? We have diffrent groups for diffrent ages. Like we have one for 3rd threw 6th graders. And one for Kindregareden to 2nd grade.

Well, we have the crêche which is about 6 months to 3 years, and then we have the youngest SS class which is about to about Year 2, I think. Then there's 3-5 and 6-8 (school years, not ages). We can go to Youth Group and Youth Events from Year 7 (it used to be Year 8, but they changed it last year because all the other states and most private schools start high school from Year 7, but it's Year 8 in public schools), and there are separate boys' and girls' small groups for years 7-9, 10-12, and Schoolies Plus (after school age, mostly uni students).

I guess it changes from church to church. The church we went to for a bit about 3 years ago had only two SS classes and Youth Group, all on Sunday morning; the SS classes were two years to seven years, and seven years to twelve years, and the youth group was twelve years plus. These are all very big age groups and I don't think it worked very well, but there simply weren't enough children or teachers for more age-specific groups.

The church I grew up in (we left when I was 11, along with about 80% of the congregation. Something happened with the elders and I really don't know what happened, but basically the church imploded [the people, not the building] so we all left. 3 other families from that church are at the one we now go to) was slightly odd in that the children were all born in bursts. There were about 9 children all born within about six months either side of me. Then there was a two-year gap before there were about 12 children all born within a year of each other. And so on. My group was the oldest; there were a few older than us but not many. My parents say that when they married and first started going to the church, there were hardly any children at all. Six months later, Jonothan was born and the rest of us all followed within the year. Anyway, the point I'm getting to is that our Sunday School classes didn't need to have a specific age group, because there was simply no need; we had a large group all near each other, and then nothing, and then another large group, and then nothing, and so on. We never really 'graduated' to a different class, because we just sort of moved along together.

And I am babbling again. Sorry.

By the way, 'kindergarten' is a German word made from the two seperate words 'kinder' (children) and 'garten' (garden). Just in case you're interested.

Okay, the same words in Hochdeutsch (High German, the 'official' language rather than a dialect like Bavarian and Pennsylvania Dutch):

    Mother: Mutter (Mutti is 'mummy')
Father: Vater pronounced 'farter' (Vati is 'daddy')
    Brother: exactly the same 'Bruder'
    Sister: Schwester pronounced 'shveshter'
    Children: the same, Kinder
Hat: Hut (this is the closest I can think of...)
Non-Germans: Englisch pronounced eng-lish not ing-glish (English), Americanisch (American), Australien prnounced ow-straah-lee-en (Australian), Franzözisch pronounced fran-zer-sish (French), and of course countless others.

I'm going to move this to a new thread.

Okay so in the new thread, you asked where i learned PD ( Pensilvaina Dutch ). I have learned it in books. Like the Mary Christner Borntroger books, they use the words but she puts them like this: daed (dad). So, you know the word and what it means. They are really helpful.

Yes, I've read it in a lot of books, too. For me it can get a little odd, like reading German words with an English spelling! It annoys me a little that there is no set way of writing PD words... one author can write a single word several different ways in the same book!

I just thought it would be pretty cool if you spoke more PD than is in the books - like you could actually say sentences or something. There's never more in the books than just an odd word or two in a sentence. I want to go to Pennsylvania one day and see if I can understand people speaking PD from my speaking Hochdeutsch.

    That sounds exciting!!!

We were meant to be going to America in about September but because of a whole bunch of stuff the holiday's been postponed until next year sometime. I'm really excited about it! I've never been to America before, nor has my father or sister (Mum went with her sister about twenty-five years ago). There's so much I want to see while over there!

Well, have fun! It'll be interesting to meet Amish people. Do you get mistaken for being Amish ever? I do a lot over here.

Yes, I've been mistaken for Brethren, Amish, a nun, a nun-in-training (???), and all sorts of other things. Usually it's just simple curiosity and I'm happy to explain, but I don't like it when people do it just to be spiteful... I try to smile and answer nicely.

I'm not sure where in America we're going (to be honest, I don't know that much about American geography). My father has a cousin who lives in America somewhere, but I'm not sure where. She's really old (she's really my grandfather's cousin) so we'll be visiting her. My father says that we can go to Indiana to meet you, but I wasn't going to say anything until I knew exactly when we were going!

I'm not sure when we're coming... next year (2013) sometime.

Does me and my parents include my sister? I suppose it does. Thankyou for the offer, though; it's very kind. I'll let my parents know. I would just warn you that I'm really the only one in my family who dresses modestly. My mother and my sister both wear trousers most of the time and although my father generally dresses modestly, if it's hot he'll wear shorts. Then again, I think we're coming in our autumn, your spring, so we'll have just had summer and maybe it won't seem so hot where you are. Anyway, just warning you!

Yes, I wear a 'swim dress' I suppose... I spent a couple of years literally wearing a dress over a bathing suit, until about two months ago I decided to make a modest bathing suit. I looked at lots of pictures of modest Christian and Jewish swimsuits on the internet and then made up the pattern. It's really comfortable and I like swimming in it. It's got little legging things past my knees, a skirt/dress almost to my knees, and sleeves a bit like a t-shirt. There are two layers, a normal leotard-type one and the skirt/dress one. Again, no-one else in my family wears modest swimwear (okay, Mum and Jessica both wear one-piece bathers, not bikinis or whatever). Would that be a problem?

My bathers are pretty much like that in shape/style, but a bit looser around the bodice. Those ones look really tight! Also mine's not all one material like those. I got the material mostly from the offcuts bin (I get most of my material from the offcuts bin) - the biggest piece was about 60cm (material about 150cm wide), that's about 24" by 5', which is the dress part now but the leotard and leggings and yoke are all different shades of blue.

The material was really difficult to work with! My machine does not like stretchy/slippery material very much!
